Digital economy has great potential, regional cooperation is at the right time

This year is the China-ASEAN Digital Economy Cooperation Year. The 17th China-ASEAN Expo has the theme of "Building the'Belt and Road' and Prospering the Digital Economy Together", highlighting the technological convenience and development dividends that the digital economy brings to regional cooperation.


   The physical exhibition and the "Eastern Cloud Expo" will be held simultaneously at this China-ASEAN Expo. There are more than a thousand "cloud" exhibitors and tens of thousands of "cloud talks" have been held. The digital economy is becoming a new growth point for China and ASEAN countries' economic and trade interconnection cooperation.


   Driven by the digital economy, e-commerce and online trade are booming. In the exhibition hall of the China-ASEAN Expo, beside the booth full of imported snacks, fill-in lights, mobile phone holders, and microphones form a simple "live-streaming hall". The distributor Ka Lingna from Malaysia is about to start a new live-streaming event. She said that live-streaming of goods under the epidemic is a new trend in consumption.


   Live streaming is not the only option to increase sales. Most exhibitors from ASEAN countries have also opened WeChat official accounts and mini programs, registered on Taobao, Tmall and other e-commerce platforms to conduct marketing promotion, expand sales channels and customer maintenance. In the exhibition hall, voices such as "pay online by swiping a QR code", "you can place an order at an online store", and "store on the cable" came one after another.


   "It's so convenient! All orders are made online, and there is no need to rush to Beijing, Shanghai and other cities to sell." Caroline, the founder of a daily chemical company in the Philippines, said excitedly.


   Relying on strong digital technology support, online trade between China and ASEAN countries has risen in the wind, e-commerce has steadily improved, and it has become the best post in the development of digital economy in the region.


   The recently signed "Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement" (RCEP) also covers modern issues such as e-commerce. Amsberger, deputy president of the AIIB, said that in the future, e-commerce can become a regional platform to facilitate cross-border trade and provide opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises in the region.


In addition to e-commerce, China and ASEAN will also create more new cooperation highlights in smart cities, 5G, artificial intelligence, big data, blockchain, telemedicine, etc., build a China-ASEAN information port, and create a "Digital Silk road".


ASEAN Secretary-General Lin Yuhui stated that it is expected that by 2025, the digital economy of ASEAN countries will increase from 1.3% of GDP in 2015 to 8.5%. China and ASEAN countries are highly complementary in the digital economy and have great potential for cooperation. It is believed that China’s support will inject new vitality into ASEAN’s digital transformation.


   "At present, the role of information and communication technology in the world is increasing. We have witnessed the digital economy becoming a new engine for economic growth in China and ASEAN." said Verasa Sompong, Consul General of the Lao Consulate General in Nanning.


  Myanmar President Win Myint suggested that ASEAN and China strengthen cooperation in digital infrastructure to promote the development of the digital economy.


   In order to meet the strong demand of China-ASEAN digital economic cooperation, the China-ASEAN Digital Trade Center is stepping up its construction in Nanning. Zhu Lin, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce of Thailand, stated that digital trade has become a key driving force in the digital economy era. The integration of digital technology into trade can enhance the resilience and vitality of the economy.


  Suparman, the former representative of Malaysia to the World Trade Organization, said that promoting cooperation between China and ASEAN in digital technology and digital economy will bring development opportunities to more companies in the region.
