Methyl silicate, also known as methyl orthosilicate, is an organosilicon compound with the chemical formula C₄H₁₂O₄Si, featuring a silicon atom bonded to four methoxy groups. It is a colorless liquid, volatile, with a pungent odor. It is soluble in organic solvents but insoluble in water. Characterized by a low boiling point and flash point, it is highly volatile and flammable. It must be kept away from ignition sources and stored in a cool, well-ventilated area. During handling, avoid inhaling vapors and prevent contact with skin and eyes; protective gloves and goggles should be worn when necessary. Additionally, methyl silicate may pose environmental hazards and must be handled and disposed of in strict accordance with relevant regulations.

Methyl silicate has several applications:

1、It serves as a raw material in the production of aerogels.

2、It is used in the preparation of silicone resins, acting as a primary raw material for MQ resins and silicone emulsions, which are applied in coatings, adhesives, and other fields.

3、It functions as a reagent and catalyst in organic synthesis for producing functionalized organosilicon compounds.
